Windows 10 SOE

Client Profile

A Federal Government Department engaged Veritec to review the their SOE and consider the security, management, maintenance and delivery of this to the current End User Workspace (EUW). As a result of the review the department engaged Veritec to create a Windows 10 SOE to be deployed to the Microsoft Surface PRO 4. The Department is an Australian government statutory authority primarily based in Canberra. The Department faced geographical relocations because of legislation needed to be upgraded with a modern workspace.

Problem

Existing Windows 10 SOE was not maintained, firmware, drivers and operating systems revisions were not current and lacked consistency throughout the Department.

Solution

Veritec provided the department with a Windows 10 SOE for the Microsoft Surface PRO 4, updated and created documented Group Policy settings.

Benefits

A best to practice built SOE 10, more manageable, patch management in place and staff provided with documentation and training.

The Challenge

The existing Windows 10 SOE was not maintained, firmware, drivers and operating system revisions were not current. The existing version of Windows 10 deployed was 1507 RTM. This was the initial release and was two versions behind the current release (v1607). Group Policy was badly designed and has many settings duplicated, the policy settings being applied included both Windows 10 and Windows 7 based templates, which isn’t best practice. This combination of policies and duplication were introducing undesirable behaviour to the departments Windows 10 deployments. The Management of the Windows 10 SOE was lacking in key areas such as patch management, Service Branching and no previous SOE builds has been documented.

The Solution

Veritec provided the department with a Windows 10 SOE for the Microsoft Surface PRO 4, updated and created Group Policy settings, upgraded the Microsoft System Centre Configuration Management Server (SCCM) v1511 to v1703. Many issues were discovered and resolved during the project as the environment had not been built or maintained to best practice. The new Windows 10 SOE was completely documented. This documentation would now provide a source of information for all new SOE builds or updates to the Veritec SOE.

The Benefits

The benefits for the department have been:

  • SOE 10 Built to best practice
  • Maintainable SOE
  • Patch Management in place (had issues pre Veritec arriving on site)
  • SCCM updated and working (had issues pre Veritec arriving on site)
  • Staff provide with documentation and training
